The Primera Bravo platform combines precision robotics, CD/DVD burning, and inkjet disc printing all in a single machine. Wouldn’t it be neat if this robust platform could be customized to your own specific needs? Well the good news is that you can do just that with the PTBurn Software Development Kit (SDK) from Primera.

Version 3.3 of the PTBurn SDK was released to the public on Friday, March 11th. With the Software Development Kit, third-party developers can create their own software programs to control the functions of the Bravo disc publishers. The SDK supports a wide range of Primera products including the Bravo SE, Bravo II, Bravo Pro, Bravo XR and XRP, the Bravo Pro Xi, and even the new Bravo 4100 series platform.

Just when you thought the world of technology couldn’t get any more exciting, Intel finally releases information about their Light Peak technology now codenamed “Thunderbolt”. Now it’s actually been a couple of weeks since Intel’s big announcement but many are still left wondering if Thunderbolt will be a true competitor for the already existing and well established Universal Serial Bus, or USB.

On one hand you have USB which was established well over a decade ago that has undergone multiple upgrades since its inception leading to mass adoption worldwide; to the new thunderbolt technology that promises much faster performance and greater throughput for PCI Express and DisplayPort protocols. So does Thunderbolt have what it takes to be crowned champion?

Measuring at 8.9 on the Richter scale, the March 11th earthquake off the coast of northeast Japan has thrust the Asian nation into immeasurable humanitarian and energy crises. While the thousand of lives that were lost far and the millions displaced far outweigh the rest of the impact, the global economy is also bracing for fallout. Japan’s quake caused a technology aftershock that affects more than one-third of the world’s NAND flash memory, which is forecasted to directly impact supply and pricing.

Chip manufacturer Toshiba is still trying to assess the disaster’s total impact on production and shipment. The company’s main plant south of Tokyo in Yokkaichi shut down temporarily over the weekend. With millions in Japan in the throes of rolling blackouts or complete darkness, Toshiba will have to coordinate with power companies to reduce electricity use down to the most basic functions.

If you are not a wizard when it comes to CD and DVD technology, this article is for you! Optical media such as CD, DVD, and Blu-ray discs look very similar to one another. They are the same size, shape, and very close in weight. However, optical media discs are not universally interchangeable. Today I’m going to talk about why this situation exists and which formats are backwards compatible.

The first 120mm optical disc was the Compact Disc (or CD), which made its commercial debut in 1982. CDs had to be played in a compact disc player, such as a set-top unit in a home stereo or in a portable CD player. These devices were not compatible with any pre-existing media formats such as compact cassettes or 8-track tapes.

The consumer electronics industry was dealt a massive blow last Friday as Japan suffered from the largest earthquake in the country’s history. This catastrophe measured upwards of an 8.9 on the Richter scale and sent a tsunami wave which devastated the coastline. The loss of life is tragic in the wake of the disaster, but for those lucky enough to survive; life will never be the same. Our hearts are with them. Please click here to donate to the Red Cross.

There are reports coming out of Japan that many of their consumer electronic manufacturing plants have shut down to assess damages. Manufactures such as Sony, Panasonic, Hitachi, Nikon, Canon, and Fujifilm have all been affected by Friday’s events and it is unclear as to when the plants will open and resume normal operations.

It was just three months ago that Rimage rolled out version 8.4 of the Rimage Software Suite for their line of professional disc publishers. We covered that update and all of its features in our blog “Rimage Software Update Adds Windows 7 Support” back in January. Now the company has released version 8.5 of the software with a few more features and fixes.

January’s update added support for 32-bit versions of Windows 7, but it did not include support for 64-bit versions. Version 8.5 adds support for 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 for client PCs connected to Rimage Professional 3400, 5400N, Producer 6100N, 7100N, and 8100N products.
